Black soldiers have left an indelible mark on Canada’s military history, their unique roles standing out in the War of 1812, they defended Upper Canada against American forces, notably in the Battle of Queenston Heights, where the ‘Company of Coloured Men’ played a pivotal role.

In the Upper Canadian Rebellion (1837-1839), around 1,000 Black militia members, organized into five companies, were instrumental in quelling the uprising, participating in critical battles like the Battle of Toronto.
