Surgeon-Major-Henry-Casgrain-Early-Militia

In 1885, Surgeon Major Henry Casgrain of the Essex Fusiliers joined Northwest Rebellion and commanded Field Hospital No. 2. This corps was the first Canadian hospital unit to see active service. You can browse his shadow box to view his many medals and other artifacts. A street in Windsor is named Casgrain in recognition of his many accomplishments. The Essex Fusiliers, officially organized during the Northwest Rebellion of 1885, has a history dating to the War of 1812, the Rebellion of 1837, the Fenian Raids and the stirring times of the American Civil War.

The Essex Fusiliers combined a garrison Artillery company with six Infantry Companies to become the ”23rd Essex Battalion”. These companies were throughout Windsor, Sandwich, Leamington, Amherstburg, Gosfield, North Ridge and Kingsville.
The 21st Battalion, Essex Fusiliers, came into being on June 12, 1885, led by Lieut.-Col. J.R. Wilkinson of Leamington. The town of Leamington named Wilkinson Drive after Lieut.-Col. J.R. Wilkinson.
